Getting what you earn and deserve

I am a firm believer in not getting anything handed to you and working for what you deserve. I grew up in a house hold where my father would teach me that nothing was going to be given to me for nothing anf that i had to earn what i have in life. There are poeple out there that have a sliver spoon in thier mouth as soon as they'er born but that wasnt the case for me or my family. I am thankful that my father installed this in me because it got me where i am today. I wasnt always the most talented or smartest so i would have to work that much harder then everybody else to get to that level. In doing so i would pass that competition wheather it be in athletics or in life because i was always working longer and harder for that final goal. My work ethic gave me a "C" on my college hockey jersey for two years even though i wasnt technically recruited to come and play here. I came on a visit here and told Keith Levinthal that I was planning on coming here to play hockey. He said you played at a quality organization and you have a spot on the roster if you do. I took that as a bit of motivation bc i know there are guys coming in that were heavily recruited and are going to look at me as a walk on. Well no ever in my four years here ever looked at me that way because of the passion and desire that i bring to the table and team. This would have never happened if my father didnt teach me this one trait that i will install in my kids heads. Even outside of athletics i have engrained this into my life. With school work i was always the one to be in the library for a couple hours more then anybody else becasue it didnt come easy for me. I was the only person in my family to go an graduate from college so this was any other feat that has brought a smile to my mother and farhers faces. I truely believe that no one should be given anything and that one should work for what they have. In life and anything that they do. I understand that sometimes your work pays off and things are given to you but if you want something i do think that anybody should be waiting for it to given to them but to go out and take for them selfs. I think one can get further inlife liveing this way then waiting for somebody to give them something

Summer/ Las Vegas

This is the summer beofre I really start my life and my career. I really want to live my life and have the last bit of fun before i go into my career and cant go places and travel too much anymore. I have always played hockey all year round so vactions were few and far between. I have only been on one vacation in my life and it was to Disney world. I have never had spring break because in high school i played baseball and in college we always were still playing hockey when everybody left for there vacation. So a couple of friends and I have desided to go to Vegas after we graduate. I see this as an opportunity to have a bit of fun and spend the rest of my money before i have to go and work everyday of my life. As you have read in all of my preveious blogs i cant wait to get out college and start my career so this isnt a bad thing that i wont have too much time to go on vacations but why not do it now while i still have time and the opportunity. I have friends that go to europe and backpack through the entire continent, which is an exciting way to finish your college career and i would love to go backpack through europe but it just wasnt the right time to do it. SO i decised to stay in this country and hopefully have the time of my life in Vegas. My parents surprised me and told me that it would be my graduation present so i absolutely love this idea. Now all i have to do is come up with money to spend and its all falling into place. were staying at the Manalay Bay and were leaving weds. nihgt and coming home monday afternoon. I know this sounds like a long time and it is but getting away for this amount of time for some relaxation is good for anybody. Going with my best friends 2 of which just graduated from Sacred Heart is going to be hopefully the best time of my life.

Stresses Of College

College can be an extrememly stressful place towrad the end of the semester. With finals and papers and trting to get your last goodbyes before everyone leaves is quite stressful. I have 4 finals and 2 papers due the week of finals. All of my teammates and friends are either done with school bc they dont have finals or they have only one or two exams. This puts a bit of added pressure on me bc i want to hang out with everybody before they leave but i know i need to finish my school work so i wony have trouble graduating. Since im a senior im trying to spend a bit more time with some of the other seniors that i wont see next year, especially my room mate whose from Toronto. I am from Rochester so Toronto is exactly across Lake Ontario from me but I dont go up there too much. Derek my room have been rooming with each other for all four years so not having him as my roommate next year is going to be a bit weird. Although i am excited to be graduating I do have alot of work to do before that day comes. I just need to bear down and finish this work so i can hand it in and have nothing to worry about. Being a senior i have a bit of senioritis and finishing this work is hard espeacially when the weather has been what it was the last week. The stress of all of this is getting to me because im trying to finish all of them in two days before i have to take my final exams. I cant wait to be done with school finally. Im not going to grad school so this is the final things i have to finish before im done forever. I just cant sit here and study and write papers to make my professors happy (No offense) anymore.

On top of all of this im starting another business idea. This idea is Ez campus storage. I was given an idea of helping international student with there moving troubles. I know and have seen many international students waste there time tring to store there belongs for the summer while they go home. Now im spreading the word and tring to help these students by storing there stuff for the summer. This makes it stress free on everybody else but more stress on me. This idea is very easy, I drop the boxes off to the students a week prior to when they leave, i come back when they are moving out and take there stuff for the summer. Then in august i will drop the boxes and thier belonging at the dorm then are moving into. Its very easy for all of these students and only tweo days of works for me so why not.

Why Rochester isnt the way to go

I was born and raised in Rochester NY. When I graduated high school from Gates-Chili High School (the second largest one in Rochester) I moved away to Long Island. All through high school I would always tell my friends and family that growing up in Rochester was going to become a dead end road for many of the kids who haven’t already established themselves with a career. Rochester is and expanding city of sorts in the means of population but not in businesses and companies. There are 3 big companies that have there head quarters in Rochester. Kodak, Xerox and Baushom & Lomb are all located in Rochester. This might sound nice to see these 3 companies in Rochester but they are laying off thousands of employees each year. So to try to find a job at one of these locations is truly not the right decision. Moving out of Rochester opened up many doors for me in the future. I have met numerous people that I will become very close friends with and those people will also help me in the future. I don’t think I would have received this opportunity back up in Rochester. Don’t get me wrong Rochester is where my family is so I love going back; I just don’t think that trying to establish a career there is the best way to go when you have so many more opportunities to go elsewhere and do better. I’m not saying go to New York City I’m just saying go to a different part of the country and establish something there. Rochester is a very nice city, if you haven’t already established a career there then I think it’s a lost cause.

Finding a Job

After graduation I’m hoping to land a job in the real estate field. I have always been mesmerized by real estate and development of real estate. In this time the financial market isn’t what it use to be so finding a job of anybodies liking is going to hard. There are jobs out there, and people are going to have to start from the bottom and work there way up instead of trying to find a dream job right away. I’m looking for jobs and for the last couple of weeks I have been brushing off the fact that jobs are hard to come by in today’s world. Now I know first hand that they weren’t lie when they said this to me. Coming right out of school now isn’t the prime time but it is what it is and I’m going to have to live with it. I have many people I have met during my time here at Manhattanville and hopefully I can use them as references to help in this troubled time. As for me trying to get into real estate right away after college, if it happens it happens, if not then I’m ok with that and I will work toward something in that field down the road. It’s not always going to go that way that I want so rolling with the punches in this time of financial crisis is fine with me. I have always been the one who works the hardest for what I have so working hard to get to the top isn’t going to be anything different for me. So I am just going to keep my head up and not get discouraged when I can’t find a job right away because I know one is out there for me.

Final Days of My Career

As the season went on I realized my hockey career was soon over. I didn’t know exactly what it would feel like but realistically it hasn’t hit me yet. As the final day of the season came closer we were preparing to take on Hobart in a 2 game series to decide who would finish 2nd and who would finish 3rd. Both games were close and both games ended in a tie. Those ties were the deciding factor of the team finishing 1 point ahead of them in the standings and getting a home game in the playoffs. So Hobart was going to come back for the first round of playoffs the very next weekend. This is the game that really mattered. As a team we prepared like never before. If we didn’t win this game our season was in jeopardy. This game was going to be a dog fight to the bitter end. Eventually we ended up losing this game and now our hope of getting into the NCAA tournament was in limbo. Our fate was in the hands of the NCAA committee. So the next week we had to practice as if we were playing a game but in reality had no idea even if we were going to get it. This was a tough situation knowing that you might be practicing for nothing. So the pairing came out and our name wasn’t called. This put some sort of a pit in my stomach because after every year in my life since I was three I was always able to get’em next year. But now it’s a different situation because there is no next year. I could go a play somewhere and make $300 a week playing the game I grew up loving but do I really want to prolong my life even further after graduating at the age of 25. So I have just kind of excepting the fact that my career is over and to look for the positive in it all. I have made numerous friends and learned countless lessons playing this game that I will take with me where ever I go, so I’m taking away from hockey many memories and lessons that will get me through the next phase of my life. In the end sports don’t last forever but they sure were fun in the process.

Loading Time

From a person who is creating a website that will eventually make me money. Loading time is a critical part of that process. I fully believe that loading time will bring back and keep viewers at a site. Have a site that takes longer than usual to load a page will make viewers impatient and not willing to come back. So if I’m creating a web site that is slow, I won’t make money because no one will put up with the slow loadings. As soon as I go to a site and it’s slow to load, I’m going to be reluctant to go back because waiting for something on the computer makes me impatient and very critical on the site. So as soon as a site is known to be slow getting your viewers to come back is the hardest part because you can’t talk to them face to face and sell it, you’re selling something and the first impression will be a bad one. If a site that I have to visit on a regualr basis is slow, then ill deal with it but as soon as I go to a site that im not on everyday, I'm not going back for sometime. There are ways that one can improve there loading time even without spending the money to do it.

No Adjectives or Adverbs

Growing up I have always wanted to be successful whether it was in sports or in the business world. I soon came to realize that sports took me to where I am today but will not take me to where I want to end up. I’m blessed with the ability to play the sport of Ice hockey. This ability took me all the way to college where I am on the verge of graduating in May. Hockey won’t last forever and I realized that a couple years back and have since been trying to figure out what I’m going to do with my life after I graduate. I soon started to become more and more interested in running and owning my own company. I figure you can work for yourself, make your own hours and have the ability to take that business to the greatest heights or the deepest lows. I find that if you’re going to work hard why not work hard for something other then a dead end job and have the capabilities to make your company grow as large as you want it.

Consistent style

I think consistent style does sometimes restrict creativity. Having a certain style sometimes many limit the entertainment of a piece of writing if the author wont go out side of their boundaries. This will make a piece of work boring if there is no uniqueness or change from the previous. Creativity to me is something different in every piece of work whether it be a book, article or blog. Not changing a thing from previous work can dull the excitement value of the work. On the other hand if an author has a style that is unique, entertaining and ever changing it can make the reader want more. This obviously is a good thing wanting your reader coming back for more, this shows that the excitement for the piece of work is there and leaving the reading wanting more. This consistent style can enhance creativity because the style of the writer is unique enough to have a active mind and make the work ever changing. Having a style that helps bring out the creative side makes the readers experience more enjoyable and willing to come back for more. Either way there are positives and negatives about the consistent style of the writer, it all depends on the reader and what they enjoy.

Visual Writing

Writing to me has become more visual over the years. One part is to make it easier for the reader to understand what they are reading and to comprehend it a bit clearer and easier. I think in Leonardo da Vinci's piece he was explaining a diagram that he had drawn and that is why there are is so much text around the picture. As the years go on sciencetists are discovering more and more about certain subjects and more detail is going into every discovery. This brings more information to the surface and now drawing a picture to describe a certain subject is easier on the reader to understand what is being said. Now the internet is becoming a house hold thing where children not even in there teen are searching the web. If online books and websites are more visual it makes it much more entertaining and visually pleasing the viewer. I believe that the writing in the near future is going to start to look like Leonardo da Vinci’s work. It is only a matter of time before there are more diagrams and pictures describing what are written in college level text books. In some cases it is quit easier to understanding something for the first time if you have something visual look at while tring to read it.

"Writing well is reading well"

I agree 100 percent with this quote. It is very clear to understand as well. There is a little bit of a hidden meaning to this as well. If one can write well which can mean they simply discuss and make a clear understanding to what one is writing, I would say they are a good writer if anyone can accomplish this task. If they can get there point across in a convincing and timely manner I would say that they are a good writer. On the other side of this quote anyone able to read well can be made into a good writer. If one can fully understand and comprehend what they are reading, then they will be a good reader/writer. If they can discuss what they have read in detail, then I would say they are a good reader. Now the quote states "writing well is reading well", this would mean that one would be a good reader if they fully understand what they are writing about and are capable of allowing the people reading there text to understand as well. I agree with this in that if a well distinguished author is a good reader they can incorporate there reading skills into a great piece of there own work. There are many authors that are capable of allowing there readers to be fully eclipsed into there work which I believe is a sign of a great writer. So being able to write well is a true assessment or there reading ability.

Frist Blog

My academic back ground is quite different then those of everybody else. I graduated high school in 2003 and I’m a senior in college now. One might wonder where did all the years go but I simply took two years off of school to try to receive a hockey scholarship from a college. I spent two years playing hockey before I enrolled into Manhattanville. It was not such a smooth transition from the two year layoff. My freshman year was a bit challenging to say the least. I haven’t read or done any school work for two or so years so I was quite difficult coming back into the academic world. The work became easier and I have proceeded to work toward a major in management and minor in communications with what I would say with minimal bumps in the road. As the years went on I became more confident in what I wanted to accomplish in my time at Manhattanville. Becoming a management major opened the doors to many opportunities that I would have never stumbled upon if I either didn’t choose this school or the major. Throughout my time between graduating high school and now I have a better understanding on what I really want to do with my life come May when I graduate college. I have always wanted to become an entrepreneur and work for my self and run my own company. Last summer I was proposed with an idea about an advertising/directory website that could help people navigate through certain towns and cities. I ran with it and now I have created one website and am in the process of creating another. This helped me learn valuable information on the steps and the work it takes to start and run a small business. This course fits into this by improving my ability to advertise and make it easier for the visitors to my site to understand more about the site and how it can help them. This course will also help me to develop flyers and posters or another advertisement to get traffic to my sites. The more traffic the more business will want to advertise on our site.
